What We Do

School House Children’s Charity (SHCC) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and supplementing the basic needs of children and young people in Northwest Indiana and the greater Chicago metropolitan area. SHCC sources and donates winter clothing and books to public school districts to support early childhood literacy, and ensure students are comfortable and confident at school.

Why We Do It

We are committed to building a future in which all children have access to comfort, safety, and the learning tools necessary to support their education. Our goal is to remove practical obstructions to learning caused by economic scarcity, such as access to books and warm clothing by building community resilience and fellowship that facilitates the sharing and distribution of these resources.

Who We Are

School House Children’s Charity relies upon the power of community, and is guided by the pursuit of supportive learning environments in which young people can grow to be kind, courageous, warm, empathetic, and communitarian. Our programs are built upon a sense of urgency to meet people where they’re at, and to put resources directly into the hands of the young people and families in need.  We believe that if we can meet basic needs of warmth, comfort, and literacy, we empower students to be more engaged in their education and give them the agency to build their own futures.

About Our Founder

Brian began his impact with children in 1999 as a staff member at the Hammond Boys and Girls Club in Hammond Indiana. There he mentored the club members and was inspired to make an impact in children’s lives. After 2 years at the Hammond Boys and Girls Club Brian began his elementary teaching in the Gary Community School Corporation. He will be beginning his 23rd year as a first grade teacher in Gary. Brian is currently working as a 1st grade teacher at Glen Park Academy, part of GCSC.

In 2014 Brian started his first Share the Warmth Coat Drive and distributed over 300 warm winter coats, hats, and gloves to students at his elementary school. Since 2014 his Share the Warmth Coat Drives have now distributed over 5000 new coats, hats, and gloves to elementary schools in Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, and the greater metropolitan Chicagoland area.

In 2022 Brian founded School House Children’s Charity, Inc. As a first grade teacher, Brian recognizes the importance of reading literacy and the impact it can have on young scholars. He distributed 600 new books to all the students and teachers at his school in 2023 in his first For the Love of Reading Book giveaway to promote the love of reading and literacy. In addition, in the spring of 2023 he partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to distribute books to children from birth to 5 to students in Lake County, IN.

Brian values his community, and strives to create kindness that connects children and their families to resources and experiences that strengthen our shared community and contribute to a brighter future for young people.
